Host gifts that are not another bottle of wine
Wine is the default because it is safe. The host already has six bottles of safe, and yours is going into the cupboard.

The problem with wine as a host gift is not that it is bad. It is that four other people brought one, the host is cooking and cannot open yours, and it goes into a cupboard undifferentiated from the rest.
A good host gift does one of two things: it is useful during the event, or it is useful the morning after. Almost everything memorable falls into one of those two categories.
Useful during
- Something that goes straight onto the table with no preparation. Good olives, proper bread, cheese that does not need cutting up.
- Ice, if it is summer. Unglamorous and the single most appreciated thing you can arrive with.
- Flowers already in a vase or a jar, since the host does not have a free hand or a spare vase.
- A bag of good coffee for the following morning, handed over with that explicitly said.
The flowers point is worth dwelling on. Cut flowers handed to a host mid-cook are a task, not a gift: they have to stop, find a vase, trim stems and find water, usually while something is on the hob.
Useful the morning after
This is the underused half. The host has spent two days preparing and will spend tomorrow morning clearing up, usually alone and usually slightly worse for wear.
A very good coffee, pastries, or breakfast they did not have to think about lands completely differently from anything consumed at the party, because it arrives at the moment nobody else is paying them any attention.
Never bring something that creates work
Anything that needs to be cooked, arranged, refrigerated urgently or admired at length is a task. The host is at capacity. That is the entire brief and almost every host-gift mistake violates it.
The same applies to anything that needs explaining. If handing it over requires a two-minute story about where you found it, you have created a conversation the host has to have while watching the oven.
If you do bring wine
Say plainly that it is for them later rather than for tonight. It removes the small obligation to open it, which is the thing that makes wine awkward rather than the wine itself.
And bring something the host actually drinks. A bottle chosen to demonstrate your own taste is a gift to yourself with someone else’s name on it.

Good gifts under sixty dollars
Sixty dollars buys something genuinely good in about four categories, and something disappointing in most of the others. Knowing which is the whole skill.
