Good gifts under sixty dollars

Sixty dollars buys something genuinely good in about four categories, and something disappointing in most of the others. Knowing which is the whole skill.

2 min read

A sixty dollar budget is not a small budget. It is a budget that buys an excellent version of some things and a poor version of others, and the entire skill is knowing which category you are standing in.

Categories where sixty dollars is a lot

  • Consumables. Genuinely excellent coffee, olive oil, chocolate, tea, honey. At this price you are buying near the top of the category rather than the bottom.
  • Books. Sixty dollars is two or three, or one beautiful edition of something they already love.
  • Single-purpose tools. A very good knife, a proper corkscrew, decent shears, a real pepper grinder. Things people use weekly and never upgrade for themselves.
  • Small fragrance. A travel size or a discovery set is the real product, not a sample of the real product.

The common thread is that all four are categories where the difference between the cheap version and the good version is immediately obvious in use, and where almost nobody buys themselves the good version.

Categories where it is not

Electronics, luggage, jewellery, anything leather, most homeware. At sixty dollars these are the entry versions, and the recipient can tell, because these are categories where quality is visible from across a room.

A brilliant sixty dollar thing beats a mediocre version of an expensive thing every time, and it does not create the awkward obligation that a visibly budget version of a luxury item does.

Spend some of it on the presentation

Five dollars of proper paper and a handwritten card changes how a fifty-five dollar object reads. This is not superficial and it is not a trick.

Unwrapping is a genuine part of receiving, and a padded envelope removes it entirely. The same object, wrapped, is a noticeably better gift than the object in the box it arrived in.

The two-thing approach

Two well-chosen thirty dollar things often beat one sixty dollar thing, because it reads as considered rather than as a single purchase. It works particularly well when one is useful and one is purely a pleasure.

A brilliant cheap thing always beats a mediocre expensive thing, and nobody has ever been disappointed by excellent coffee.
