Storiesscent memory
What fall actually smells like, in five notes
Autumn fragrance has been reduced to pumpkin and cinnamon. The real thing is drier, colder and considerably less sweet.

The commercial version of autumn is a bakery. Pumpkin, cinnamon, sugar, something described as spiced. It is pleasant, it sells extremely well, and it smells almost nothing like being outside in October.
The actual season is drier and colder than that, and it breaks down into about five things. Recognizing them changes what you look for on a shelf.
Dry leaves, which is not a sweet smell
Fallen leaves smell papery and faintly bitter, closer to tea and tobacco than to anything edible. In perfumery this territory is usually built from dry woods, tobacco leaf and sometimes hay.
If a fragrance claiming to be autumnal has nothing dry in it at all, it is describing a kitchen rather than a season.
Cold air
Cold does have a smell, or at least a sensation that registers as one: sharp, mineral, slightly metallic. It is why the first genuinely cold morning of the year is so instantly recognizable before you have seen anything at all.
Perfumery gets at this with aldehydes and certain clean musks, which is why some autumn scents have a strange brightness at the top that seems to contradict the rest.
Smoke, at a distance
Not a fireplace you are sitting next to. Smoke from somewhere else, thinned by cold air. Incense and birch tar do this in perfumery, and the distance is what keeps it from smelling like an ashtray.
This is the note most often overdone. A little reads as a season; a lot reads as a bonfire, and a bonfire is an event rather than a background.
Damp earth
The smell after rain on soil has a name, petrichor, and it is the most autumn-specific thing on the list. Vetiver, patchouli and oakmoss all live in this area, which is why they turn up in so much cold-weather perfumery.
Something warm, underneath
This is where the sweetness actually belongs, and where the bakery version goes wrong by putting it on top. Vanilla, amber and resins work as a base under the dry notes rather than as the headline.
The structural difference is audible if you think of it as music: the warm note should be the bass line, not the melody.
How to check any of this
Go outside on a cold evening and pay attention for thirty seconds. Almost nobody does, which is why the pumpkin version has gone unchallenged for a decade and why so many people conclude they dislike autumn fragrance when what they dislike is dessert.
