Storiesscent memory
How to record a family smell before it disappears
Every family has two or three smells that will vanish without anybody deciding to let them. They are recordable, but only while someone still remembers.

There is a particular kind of loss that people only notice long after it happens. A grandparent’s house, a soap nobody makes anymore, a specific kitchen. Nobody photographs a smell, and then one day it is simply not available anywhere.
Some of it is recoverable, but only if you act while the people who know are still around to ask, and the window is shorter than it looks.
Ask the specific question
"What did the house smell like" gets you nothing. People genuinely cannot answer that, and they will say something vague about home and move on.
Ask instead what soap was in the bathroom, what was usually cooking, what was used for cleaning, what someone wore. Those are answerable, and together they reconstruct most of it.
- The soap and the washing powder, by brand if anyone remembers
- What was cooking on an ordinary day, not at Christmas
- What the person wore, and whether it changed over the years
- Anything burned, polished or aired regularly
- What the garage, the car or the garden shed smelled of, which people remember unusually well
Write it down the same day
This information decays quickly and it usually lives in one or two people. A page in a notes app is enough. The point is only that it exists somewhere other than in the head of the oldest person in the family.
Record the conversation if they will let you. Voice notes preserve the asides, and the asides are where the specifics turn up.
Expect the reformulation problem
Ingredient restrictions and cost have changed most long-lived fragrances substantially, so a bottle bought today often does not smell like the same bottle from 1985. Vintage sellers exist for exactly this reason, and a small decant is usually enough.
Then keep a small amount unused
If you do find it, do not use it all. Sealed, stored out of light and heat, a small amount lasts years, and having it available to open once in a while is worth considerably more than wearing it regularly until it is gone.
Photographs record what a place looked like. Nobody ever thinks to record what it smelled like, which is the part that comes back hardest.
