How to mark a small win without turning it into content
Most small wins get no acknowledgement at all, and the few that do get posted rather than enjoyed. There is a version in between.

Small wins have two standard fates. Most get nothing at all, absorbed straight into the next task before anyone has registered them. A few get photographed and posted, which converts the thing into an announcement and hands the pleasure over to other people’s responses.
The useful middle is private, immediate and physical, and it takes about fifteen minutes in total.
Stop for ten minutes
Not an evening out. Ten minutes in which you do not start the next thing. The immediate rollover is what makes a year of achievements feel like a year of nothing in particular, because nothing was ever allowed to land.
Physically leaving the desk helps. A win acknowledged in the same chair, in the same posture, with the same tabs open, does not register as an event at all.
Tell one person
One, chosen because they will be genuinely pleased rather than because they will be impressed. Those are different people and it is worth knowing which is which.
A broadcast gets you a count of reactions. One person gets you an actual response, which is what you were after and what a count cannot substitute for.
Write down what it cost
- How long it actually took, which is always longer than you will later remember
- The part you nearly gave up on
- What you would tell someone starting it now
This is the part worth keeping. Outcomes are easy to remember and tell you nothing useful. The cost is what you will need the next time something is hard and you have convinced yourself the last one was straightforward.
Almost everyone systematically underestimates the difficulty of things they have already finished, which is why the second attempt at something hard is so often accompanied by the feeling that you have got worse.
Then let it be small
A small win inflated into an occasion becomes exhausting, and you stop having them because the ceremony is too expensive to keep paying for.
Ten minutes, one person, three lines. That is enough to make a year feel like it contained things, which is the entire objective.
