Wedding guest prep without the last-minute scramble
Wedding days are long in a way normal events are not. Dress for hour six, not for the photographs at hour one.
2 min read
Most wedding guest advice optimizes for the ceremony photographs. The ceremony is about forty minutes of a twelve-hour day, and the other eleven hours are where the outfit either holds up or starts making decisions for you.
The useful mental model is that you are dressing for hour six: warm, slightly tired, standing up, some distance from anywhere you could change.
Break the shoes in properly
Two or three hours of actual wear at home, on hard floors, across more than one day. Not ten minutes around a carpet. This is the single most common failure and it ends with someone barefoot holding their shoes at 10pm, which is fine but was entirely avoidable.
If the shoes are new and there is no time to break them in, bring different shoes. A pair you can stand in beats a pair that photographs better for forty minutes.
Steam the night before, not the morning of
Morning-of steaming means damp fabric, a rushed bag and no margin if something is stained. Do it the night before and hang it somewhere it cannot fall or be sat on.
Check it in daylight while you are at it. Marks that are invisible under a bedroom light are not invisible in an August garden.
Pack the small bag properly
- Blister plasters, before you need them rather than after
- A safety pin and a stain pen
- Painkillers and something to eat, because the gap between the ceremony and the food is always longer than anyone says
- A phone battery pack
- Flat shoes in the car, not in the bag
The snack is not a joke. Weddings routinely run a five-hour gap between breakfast and the first food, usually with drinks served in the middle of it, and most of the low points of a wedding day are traceable to that gap.
Sort the transport before the day
Getting there is easy. Getting back at midnight from a venue in the countryside is not, and it is the thing that most reliably turns a good day into a stressful ending. Book it in advance even if it feels excessive, and confirm it in the afternoon.
If you are staying nearby, find out in advance whether the venue has a last-orders time and whether anything runs afterwards. Couples often assume guests know this and it is never on the invitation.
The rule that covers the rest
Prepare for the version of the day where everything runs ninety minutes late, because it usually does. Every decision that survives that version is a good decision.

You have five minutes. Most of what people do in them is the wrong five minutes of work.

How to reset between work and going out
The reason you do not feel like going out at 7pm is that you are still in the day. The transition takes about twenty minutes and most people skip it entirely.
