The five-minute routine for when you are already late
You have five minutes. Most of what people do in them is the wrong five minutes of work.

When you are late, the instinct is to do a compressed version of the whole routine. That is the mistake. A rushed version of everything looks noticeably worse than a complete version of three things.
Pick the three or four items with the highest visible return and do them properly, at normal speed. Rushing is itself visible.
The five minutes
- One color story. Everything in two colors that already go together. This does more for how put-together you look than any individual item does.
- Fix the top third. Hair and face are what people see in conversation. Nobody is examining your shoes.
- Deodorant and scent. Thirty seconds, disproportionate return.
- One deliberate detail. A watch, a jacket, one thing that looks chosen rather than grabbed.
- Leave. Do not check the mirror again.
The final instruction is the one that saves the most time. The second mirror check has never once resulted in an improvement and reliably costs another three minutes.
Why the color rule works
Most of the impression of being well dressed comes from coherence rather than from any single garment. Two colors that already work together produce coherence automatically, without requiring any decisions, which is exactly what you do not have time for.
It is also why an all-one-color outfit reads as deliberate even when it was assembled in ninety seconds.
What to skip without guilt
Anything that needs to dry. Anything you have not done before. Anything requiring both hands and a mirror for more than a minute. And ironing, which nobody has ever noticed the absence of at a party.
Also skip the outfit change. The second option is rarely better than the first and it is the most expensive five minutes available.
Then stop apologizing for it
Arriving and immediately explaining that you got ready in five minutes draws attention to the thing nobody had noticed. It is a strange reflex and almost everyone has it.
Late is a situation, not a personality. Neither is it a thing anyone needs a report on.

A Sunday reset that does not eat your Sunday
The reset is supposed to reduce the number of decisions in your week. Most versions of it have quietly become another full day of work.
