How to reset between work and going out

The reason you do not feel like going out at 7pm is that you are still in the day. The transition takes about twenty minutes and most people skip it entirely.

2 min read

You said yes on Tuesday. It is now Friday at seven and you would rather not. This is almost never about the plan, and it is almost never about the people.

It is that you have gone straight from work mode to getting dressed with no gap in between, and work mode does not want to go dancing. A transition costs about twenty minutes and it changes the entire evening.

Close the day properly

Shut the laptop, clear the desk, write tomorrow’s first task on something. An unclosed day keeps running in the background all night, which is why you end up checking your phone at the bar and cannot explain what you were looking for.

This step takes four minutes and it is the one people skip most often, because it feels like work at the moment you have decided to stop working.

Change the inputs

  1. Shower, even a short one. Water is the most reliable state-change available to anyone.
  2. Change the light. Lamps rather than the overhead.
  3. Change the sound. Something with a different tempo to whatever you worked to.
  4. Drink water and eat something. Going out hungry is a decision you make at 7 and regret at 11.

These sound trivial and they work because state is mostly environmental. You have been sitting in the same sensory environment since nine in the morning, and the body takes its cues from the room rather than from the calendar.

Leave before the second wind arrives

Do not wait until you feel like going. The feeling usually shows up about twenty minutes after you arrive, not before you leave. Waiting for it at home is how the evening gets cancelled at 8:30 by text.

If it helps, agree a departure time with someone else. An external commitment converts an open-ended decision into a fixed one, and open-ended decisions are what get renegotiated on the sofa.

When not going is the right call

Sometimes it genuinely is. But test it after the transition rather than before, because before the transition you are not answering the question, the day is answering it for you.

If you have showered, changed and eaten and still do not want to go, that is real information and you should act on it without guilt. The transition is not a trick to make you go out. It is a way of finding out what you actually want.
