Oud for beginners: what it smells like and where to start

Oud has a reputation for being heavy and difficult. Some of it is. Here is what the note really is, why it divides people, and the gentlest ways in.

2 min read

Oud is one of the most talked-about notes in perfumery and one of the most misunderstood. People describe it as smoky, animalic, medicinal, leathery or simply rich, and all of them are right about some oud, somewhere.

What oud is

Oud, also called agarwood, is a dark, fragrant resin that forms inside certain trees when the wood is infected by a mold. The tree produces the resin as a defense. Natural oud is rare and expensive, which is why many modern fragrances use a blend of natural and recreated materials to capture its character.

Why it divides people

Raw oud can be intense in a way most Western fragrances are not: woody and resinous, sometimes with a barnyard or leather edge. For someone used to fresh or sweet scents, that first encounter can feel like a lot. The way in is not to find a weaker oud, but an oud that has been paired with something familiar.

How to wear oud

  • Start with one spray. Oud projects more than you expect, and you can always add.
  • Test on skin and wait. Oud compositions change a lot over the first hour.
  • Cold weather suits it. Heat can make resinous notes feel heavy.
  • Pair it with simple clothes and settings. It is already the loudest thing in the room.

Most people who end up loving oud did not like their first one. It is a note that rewards a second try, ideally with a softer version first.
