The material
A leaf, not a wood. Patchouli comes from a bushy herb in the mint family grown mostly in Indonesia and India, and the oil is steam-distilled from the dried leaves. It improves with age, which is unusual — most perfume materials do the opposite.
The smell
Dark, earthy and slightly sweet, with a damp-soil edge underneath. Modern fractionated patchouli strips out the mustiness and leaves the chocolatey, wine-like part, which is why it reads richer in new fragrances than in the 1970s ones people remember.
On skin
A base note that anchors everything above it. It is one of the longest-lasting materials in perfumery, and it is usually what you are still smelling on a shirt collar the next morning.
